Executive Summary






4Frontiers is presently involved in a number of different ventures and is actively exploring numerous new business opportunities. Our internship program is intended to leverage the enthusiasm, energy and skills of promising students to assist the company in the pursuit of these opportunities. In turn, exposure to 4Frontiers’ dynamic and exciting business environment will provide students essential hands-on experience.

4Frontiers is presently seeking several students to fill vacancies in our internship program. At the moment, these are limited to non-paid internships. Specific internship opportunities and desired intern skill sets are described below:
 
Un-paid Internships
    Internship candidates should submit a copy of their resume, as well as a two-paged letter indicating their areas of interest and describing why they would like to work with 4Frontiers.

    All successful candidates will be self starters, organized, and articulate. They must be able to communicate their ideas and concepts effectively via both speaking & technical writing. They must be able to work well - both with a team and independently. Most importantly, the successful candidate must be enthusiastic about 4Frontiers' mission and be willing to work hard to assist the company in its efforts to open the space frontier.
     
    Preference for all internships will be given to those students who are available to work out of 4Frontiers’ New Port Richey office, but this should not discourage those who cannot meet this condition from applying. For unpaid internships, work schedules and duration of internship will be determined on a case by case basis. Interns who deliver and perform well for the company will be viewed favorably for future paid positions.


     
    Structural Engineer - Mars Settlement Concepts
     
    The successful candidate will work on structural design concepts for various permanent habitat configurations generated during the 4Frontiers second generation Mars settlement study. Given defined boundary conditions including ISRU material availability and characteristics, general habitat architectural concept, and a list of conditioned space sizes/uses, the candidate will develop and assess general feasibility of related structural design approaches. Primary structural materials for pressurized habitats will include steel, concrete, and polymers.
     
    A background in structural design of occupied and/or pressurized structures is strongly preferred. Also an undergraduate degree and/or masters level student is preferred.
     


    Mars Analog Simulation Design
     
    The successful candidate will assist a dedicated 4Frontiers project team with the design of a videotaped simulation exercise. This sim will be focused on the earliest (Bootstrapping) stage of human Mars surface activity that is related to the first permanent settlement. The planned live exercise is intended to assess both crew psychology/sociology as well as habitat design characteristics. Design and fabrication of a mock-up habitat, having room for a crew of 4-6, is part of the project scope.
     
    The candidate may focus on one or more of the following areas, depending upon background, experience and area of interest:
    • Planning and/or design of specific activities for the exercise. - These may include simulated water recovery (drilling or extraction from hydrated minerals), gas/fuel plant operation, equipment staging or fabrication, agricultural pod testing, selected resource (minerals, etc.) detection or recovery, or other similar activities.
    • Planning and/or design of habitat interior features or layout
    • Planning and/or design of activities related to crew sociology or psychology
    • Planning and/or design of activities related to human factors
    • Planning communication systems and related protocols for the exercise
    • Identifying and evaluating exercise venue choices
    Candidate should have a technical background in at least one of the above listed areas.
     

     
    Technical Writing for Mars Settlement Research
     
    In this role, the individual will work with 4Frontiers technical team to compile its second generation Mars settlement design documents and papers into a book publication format. 4Frontiers is in discussions with the AIAA Space Colonization Technical Committee (SCTC), who may provide editing, and incorporate 4Frontiers Mars settlement materials into a larger publication on space settlement.
     
    The candidate may focus on one or more of the following areas depending upon background, experience and areas of interest:
    • Material science/ISRU (mining, refining, manufacturing)
    • Space habitats and habitation
    • Mission planning
    • Agriculture and/or aquaculture
    • Human factors
    • Architectural, mechanical, electrical, process, or aerospace engineering
    Candidates must have technical writing skills and a technical background in at least one of the areas listed above.
     

     
    Mars Settlement Architecture
     
    The successful candidate will work on the architectural design of the 4Frontiers second generation Mars settlement. 4Frontiers has engaged a well respected international architectural firm with whom this intern will directly interface. Responsibilities will include providing technical support, solving technical problems during the concept and detailed design of both the exterior and interior architectural features. Intern will serve as the interface between 4Frontiers technical consultants (who produced the discipline concepts for the Mars settlement study) and the architectural design firm.

    A background in space architecture and/or architectural interior design is strongly preferred. Also a masters or Ph.D. level student is preferred.

    The candidate may focus on one or more of the following areas depending upon background, experience and areas of interest:
    • Interior architectural layout and features
    • Exterior architectural details
    • City planning, city growth and staging.
     
     

     
    Sales, Promotion and Vendor Partnerships
     
    As part of the Mars Analog Simulation project mentioned above, 4Frontiers will offer advertisement space, various promotional opportunities, and equipment partnerships with interested commercial entities.
     
    The following two related positions are open with focus areas as indicated:
     
    Promotional sales:
    • Identify opportunities and target customers for sale of advertisement and/or promotional space in the Mars analog simulation.
    • Identify opportunities and target customers for product placement type promotion.
    • Prepare a related sales pitch with the assistance of the 4Frontiers marketing manager.
    • Conduct direct sales to customers through phone, face-to-face, and possibly other approaches.
    Representative for equipment vendor partnerships:
    • Identify opportunities and target partnerships for use of vendor equipment in the Mars analog simulation.
    • Prepare a related pitch package with the assistance of 4Frontiers marketing manager and technical team.
    • Conduct direct discussions and presentations of the pitch package to potential partners
    • Assist 4Frontiers with the assembly of basic scope elements for pending perspective partners.
    The preferred candidate will have experience in either advertising sales or marketing as it relates to one of the specific positions above. A strong interest in space settlement or exploration is essential, and a technical background related to space is a plus for the equipment vendor position.
     

     
    Website Development
     
    The successful candidate will assist 4Frontiers media and web development team with the improvement and expansion of the 4Frontiers websites, including the corporate site, Crazy4Mars.com, and the 4Frontiers webstore. These sites require expansion and improvement on an ongoing basis, as new materials suitable for website publication are being generated by many of 4Frontiers current business activities. Of particular note, the Generation II Mars settlement study is nearing completion. A significant amount of new, exciting content has been generated and needs to be formatted and displayed in a manner which is both informative and entertaining.
     
    The candidate should have a solid track record of past web and graphics development experience. Knowledge and experience implementing web projects with HTML, PHP, mySQL, Javascript, and graphics manipulation in Photoshop is required. Experience with flash development and graphics design is a strong plus. Additional useful experience includes implementing web security, FTP servers, encrypted email and online databases as well as video, graphics and animation creation.
     

     
     
    Public Relations / Promotion / Marketing
     
    4Frontiers is seeking one or more interns to assist our marketing manager with public relations, promotion and marketing efforts. The successful candidate should consider themselves well versed at persuasive writing and speaking. They should have an eye for composition, style, and graphics layout. Strong computer skills including graphics manipulation in Photoshop, MS Publisher and comparable programs is required.
     
    The candidate may focus on one or more of the following areas depending upon background, experience and areas of interest:
    • Assist in the design and assembly of promotional flyers and brochures, targeted at a variety of different audiences and highlighting different aspects of 4Frontiers business and capabilities. This would include content writing as well as graphic and picture layout and composition.
    • Assist the marketing manager and other 4Frontiers staff with promotional events and presentations. These would include meeting with the public during our outreach campaigns (library and recreation center presentations) and the upcoming FASS and FAST presentations in October.
    • Assist in conveying a positive public perception of the company and connecting with new market segments and groups to increase 4Frontiers customer base. Specific market segments may include potential consulting customers, the general public, children and potential strategic partners.
    • Help with the selection and coordination of 4Frontiers expanding product line, to be offered in our online store.
    • Assist in exploring options for a future retail sales operation.
    • Assist with media / press releases and press relations.

    Candidates with past experience in public relations, promotion and marketing are preferred.
